Wheat quality market intelligence: North Asia

With investment from Grains Australia, AEGIC will work with customers of Australian wheat in China, Japan, Taiwan and Korea to collate objective intelligence on the quality and functionality attributes that customers require from Australian wheat. These insights will help inform Australian industry decision-making on opportunities in these markets.

This project complements AEGIC’s project Wheat quality market intelligence: South East Asia.

The project will combine these findings to allow a cohesive, comprehensive set of recommendations to be made to Grains Australia, Grains Australia Wheat Council and the Australian wheat industry.

Completed (April-June 2025)

  • While the project officially commenced in July 2025, we completed initial discussions with customers in Taiwan, Japan and South Korea in June 2025.

Completed (July-September 2025)

  • We travelled to China to begin documenting the wheat quality preferences of Chinese customers.
  • This trip involved engaging with flour millers to identify which products to study in China, focusing on southern, eastern and northern Chinese wheat quality preferences.

Scheduled (October-December 2025)

  • Further meetings and surveys with collaborators are planned for December 2025 to continue documenting their preferred wheat quality attributes for various end-products.
