- Prize to be awarded at gala dinner on May 19 in Sydney
Australasia’s most prestigious annual baking prize – the LA Judge Award – will once again recognise the best young baking apprentice in Australia and New Zealand.
Each year bakers who are just about to finish – or have recently finished – their apprenticeship compete for the honour of the LA Judge title.
Each Australian state, and New Zealand, has the opportunity to nominate a competitor 23 years or younger. These young bakers’ skills are evaluated in areas of practical baking, technical knowledge and communication abilities during the three days of competition.
AEGIC General Manager – Research & Technical Services Ken Quail said AEGIC was proud to host the LA Judge Award for the first time in 2016.
“Recognising the skills of our young bakers ensures the development of a strong baking industry through encouragement of leadership,” he said.
The 2015 winner of the LA Judge Award – Daniel Li – is now Bakery Leader at AEGIC’s Sydney laboratory. Daniel was formerly an apprentice baker at Bakers Delight in Perth.
Dr Quail said the gala dinner and award presentation was attended by more than 170 industry stakeholders in 2015.
“Leading industry companies have supported this award for nearly 50 years to improve the industry and encourage young people to better their skills through competition. AEGIC is proud continue hosting this event, but cannot continue without the vital support of industry partners,” he said.
